How to compare car purchase offers.
If you already have a CarMax, Carvana or dealer offer, use it as a starting point. Before accepting a second offer, make sure you are comparing the same car, the same facts and the same conditions.
1. Start with the same vehicle details
Give each buyer the same mileage, trim, options and known condition information. Keep your VIN or license plate handy. If a detail is uncertain, say so rather than guessing. An estimate based on different information is not a useful comparison.
2. Read the conditions behind the number
Ask whether the amount is an initial estimate or a purchase offer, when it expires, and what still needs to be verified. Request the inspection conditions and any charges in writing. Do not assume different buyers use identical terms.
3. Compare what you would receive
Write down the purchase amount, any disclosed deductions and any outstanding loan payoff. If you have a loan, confirm the payoff and handling process with your lender and the buyer. The headline purchase price and the amount left for you may differ.
4. Consider the handover
Ask when and how payment will be made, who handles the paperwork, where the vehicle will be inspected, and whether transport involves a charge. Get clear answers before committing to an appointment or signing anything.
A simple comparison checklist
- Same vehicle, mileage and disclosed condition
- Written offer amount and expiration
- Inspection and verification requirements
- Itemized charges or deductions, if any
- Loan payoff handling, if applicable
- Payment timing and vehicle handover arrangements
What if your current offer feels too low?
Request another review using the same facts. A second offer gives you another option; it does not guarantee a higher price. Choose the proposal whose amount and conditions work for you.
